FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is LIFELINE Intervene?
LIFELINE Intervene is a supplement for young beef and dairy calves when extra nutritional support is needed. One carton of Intervene provides one calf with extra nutritional support twice daily for 5 days.
When should Intervene be given to a calf?
Intervene should be given anytime a young beef or dairy calf needs extra nutritional support.
How does Intervene work?
When used as directed, Intervene supplies important functional proteins, electrolytes, vitamins and minerals, plus extra fluids. The functional proteins in Intervene go straight to the calf’s gut to help maintain normal intestinal health, which keeps the calf growing and thriving.
What are functional proteins?
Through a proprietary process, the plasma is fractionated to form serum in a manner that retains specific proteins that help to nutritionally maintain normal immune function and intestinal health in young production animals. The serum containing these functional proteins is then spray dried for inclusion in LIFELINE nutritional supplements.
How do I mix and feed Intervene?
It is important to note that Intervene should be fed 3 – 4 hours after the milk feeding. Mix 1 packet of Intervene into 2 quarts of warm (105°F) water and stir until the powder dissolves completely. Pour Intervene into a calf bottle and nipple feed the entire mixture to the calf. Use the 5-day feeding chart on the Intervene carton to keep track of each day’s feedings.
Can I just add Intervene to the calf’s milk feeding?
No. One of the benefits of Intervene is that it provides the calf with extra fluids between milk feedings. This would not be achieved by mixing Intervene into milk or milk replacer. Intervene provides 4 quarts of extra liquids per day.
Can a calf eat that much?
Larger calves can typically consume the extra liquids but smaller calves may have difficulty. If a calf struggles to finish the Intervene, reduce the milk feedings to 1 quart per feeding to encourage full intake of Intervene.
Should I stop giving milk feedings while a calf is on Intervene?
No. Intervene does not contain enough nutrients and calories to support a calf without milk. The calf should be given its regular milk or milk replacer feedings while on Intervene. For expert advice on calf nutrition, contact your veterinarian.
Should I feed electrolytes while a calf is on Intervene?
No. Intervene provides functional proteins plus electrolytes. Do not feed additional electrolytes to the calf.
Why can’t I just give electrolytes to my calf instead of Intervene?
An oral electrolyte solution can provide electrolytes and fluids, but cannot provide the full nutritional support needed for optimal gut health. When used as directed, Intervene supports normal intestinal health and also provides extra fluids to the calf.
Do I have to give the same calf all 10 packets of Intervene, or can multiple calves share the carton?
For the very best results, one calf should be given all 10 packets of Intervene in a carton. The Intervene should be fed twice daily over 5 consecutive days, in between milk feedings.
How long does it take to mix Intervene?
Intervene mixes into warm water extremely well and is ready to feed in less than one minute.
What is the shelf life of Intervene?
Intervene has a 24-month shelf life when stored unopened in a cool, dry location at a temperature of 50° – 86°F. Once Intervene is mixed with water it should be fed to the calf immediately and never stored.
